General Suggestions
When preparing for your hunting safari with Claassens Safaris, there are several important considerations to keep in mind. We want to ensure that you have a successful and comfortable experience while enjoying your time in the wild. Here are some general suggestions and recommended guidelines for your safari:
- Don’t forget to pack a raincoat and odorless sunscreen with a minimum SPF of 20 to protect yourself from the elements.
- A good hat is essential to shield yourself from the sun.
- Three sets of hunting clothes in khaki or camo are recommended, but note that camo is not allowed when hunting in Zimbabwe.
- For the colder winter evenings, be sure to bring a thick jacket, gloves, and possibly a small scarf.
- Comfortable walking boots with thick socks are a must. Pack two pairs that are well-worn to avoid discomfort.
- Personal medication should be on hand in case of any health needs.
- Capture your memories with a good camera and ample film or memory sticks. Camcorders are also welcome; just remember your battery recharge equipment.
- If you’re bringing a rifle, make sure you also have cleaning equipment.
- Be sure to bring enough ammunition for your rifle(s). Keep in mind that you’re limited to 200 rounds per firearm.
- Binoculars are invaluable for spotting wildlife from a distance.
- If you’re inclined to document your hunting experiences, consider bringing a diary.
- Insect repellent is advised if you’re hunting during the summer months (September – April).
- If your electrical devices require a different voltage, bring a converter as we have a 220 V power supply.
Selecting Your Rifle
When it comes to rifles and calibers, choose the one you’re most comfortable and familiar with. Spending time on the shooting range before your African hunt will help you feel confident and accurate. While there’s much debate about rifle choice, we suggest a .30-06 or 300 Win Mag, and a .375 for more versatility. If you plan to hunt any of the Big Five, a .375 caliber is legally required.
For plains game, consider rifles like the 7mm Rem Mag, 30-06, and 300 Win Mag. The 300 Win Mag is particularly versatile. When hunting dangerous game, like elephant, rhino, buffalo, and lion, the .375 caliber is the minimum requirement. Shot placement matters more than the caliber used. Our professional hunters will guide you on where to shoot for optimal results. Whether you’re hunting dangerous or plains game, practicing shooting off sticks and free-hand shooting is essential.
